43rd Annual Award of Excellence Winner - Clyde N. Baker, Jr.

Clyde N. Baker, Jr., was chosen from a field of the Top 25 Newsmakers of 2007 for his innovations and achievements in the field of geotechnical engineering, most notably increasing the allowable bearing loads for large foundations. Baker's major contributions to the field of geotechnical engineering have firmed up the science of soils to support the extreme skyscrapers of tomorrow, including the Chicago Spire and Burj Dubai. During his 50 years as a geotechnical engineer, Baker has enabled designers and engineers to build super-high and super-confidently, as they pack in more valued space at less cost to developers. From his early days at the challenging site of Chicago's John Hancock Center to today's tallest buildings, Baker's ability to analyze soil conditions, back up predictions with proven tests and convey opinions with an expert yet easygoing style has elevatedBaker and his firm to one of the most sought-after geotechnical consultants and peer reviewers. Award of Honor – Clyde N. Baker Jr.

Clyde N. Baker, Jr., P.E., Senior Principal, received the 2006 Award of Honor from the Chicago Building Congress (CBC). The Award of Honor has been presented annually since 1995 and recognizes an outstanding leader for major contributions to the Chicago building industry. Baker has served as geotechnical engineer or consultant on seven of the 16 tallest buildings in the world, including the three tallest buildings in Chicago – the Sears Tower, Aon Center and John Hancock Center; and the tallest buildings in the world – Taipei 101, in Taiwan and the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Non-Member Outstanding Achievement in Construction – Clyde N. Baker Jr.

Clyde N. Baker, Jr., P.E., Senior Principal, received The Moles’ Non-Member Outstanding Achievement in Construction Award. The Moles Awards were instituted in 1941 to honor outstanding ability and accomplishment in the heavy construction field. Baker joined STS in 1954 and over the next 50 years, he served as the geotechnical engineer on the major portion of high rise construction in Chicago. Baker developed an international reputation in the design and construction of deep foundations and has been a leader in using in-situ testing techniques correlated with past building performance to develop more efficient designs.
Engineering Excellence – State Finalist Award
Given by: American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Wisconsin
STS used an innovative technology called horizontal well biosparging for APW Mayville in Mayville, Wisconsin. The system was designed to degrade the high concentrations of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) in the groundwater. STS installed a cost-effective solution that decreased the CVOCs by 98 percent in one month – thus protecting the nearby stream and potable water supply.
2005
Project of the Year
Given by: International Concrete Repair Institute
STS served as project engineer/designer for a delayed coking unit turnaround at a major southwestern U.S. refinery. The project was completed on-time and under budget utilizing advanced engineering, pre-planning techniques and construction processes.
Annual Excellence Award
Given by: Michigan Association of Environmental Professionals
STS was recognized for its cost-saving and innovative solutions for Consumers Energy Company’s 68-acre BC Cobb Ash Landfill Remediation, Closure and Reclamation project. STS’ efforts resulted in beneficial re-use of the site that will meet the recreational needs of the City of Muskegon and the regulatory requirements of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). “The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has called this site a national model of how local and state government and industry can work together to restore a brownfield site for a beneficial use.” The Weekly - Consumers Energy Co. newsletter.

For successful application of slope stabilizing techniques that maximized the space available for project construction within a highly confined residential area.
Engineering Excellence Award

For a railroad improvement project that resulted in a $250,000-$300,000 per year cost savings for the client.

For outstanding concrete repair on the Port Edwards Dam Project.
The award placed first in the water structures category. Entries were judged on uniqueness, state-of-the-art methodology, materials usage, value engineering and aesthetics.

The award recognized STS for several technically challenging design/construction accomplishments on the Milwaukee Center project. These included perimeter slurry wall for groundwater control; the use of the top down procedure to minimize lateral wall movement and to permit above-ground construction to proceed simultaneously with basement excavation; as well as the use of caisson foundations constructed under slurry for both a high end bearing pressure (60,000 psf) and significant side friction.

STS conducted extensive geotechnical analysis to evaluate the subsurface conditions for the U.S. Navy’s Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) submarine communication system to be placed underground on a site that spans Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

ASCE Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (Illinois Section)

STS provided geotechnical engineering for six excavated reservoirs and earth dam flood control structures in northwest suburban Chicago. The effort for the Upper Salt Creek Watershed spanned a nine-year period and was developed by the MSDGC and SCS.
