Project Overview
The Peoria Civic Center revitalization project will enhance Peoria's downtown entertainment and convention venue. The arena attracts nearly one million people each year to its concerts, sporting events, family shows and seasonal attractions. The $55 million project will add 160,000 square feet of space to the venue, including the exhibit hall, meeting space/ballroom, kitchen facilities, food courts, and new administration, offices and retail space. The entrance will also be upgraded to create a brighter, more inviting entry to guests.
Approach
PSA-Dewberry (PSA) partnered with STS to provide numerous site development services to renovate the existing Civic Center. To start off, the project was divided into phases to keep the complex remodeling and addition on schedule. STS’ services included modifying the existing mechanical, plumbing and fire protection systems and replacing the electrical system. Structural and geotechnical work included foundation design for the new facility, significant modifications to the existing facility and reviewing the soils report to provide recommendations on modifying the design to save money.
The civil portion of STS’ work included the demolition and design of two new parking lots, demolition of three buildings, storm water detention system, parking booths, perimeter fencing and stage construction. Surveying work included boundary and topographic survey of the entire 12-acre campus. STS also provided landscape architecture and irrigation design.
Client Benefits
- STS’ geotechnical recommendations on design modification saved the owner tens of thousands of dollars on structural and foundation design.
- The client and owner relied on one firm, STS, for numerous engineering services, versus working with several firms.
- One project manager coordinated STS’ services, which enhanced communication and coordination of services.
