Project overview
DesignBuild Associates, LLC (DesignBuild) needed streamlined engineering support in the development of a new 56,000-square-foot medical oncology clinic located on 12 acres near the new OSF Saint Francis Center for Health. The client wanted a single point-of-contact that could provide multiple engineering and design services to lessen the burden of coordinating between consultants.
The building was dedicated to the total care of oncology patients. The complex includes exam and treatment rooms, education classrooms, a lounge, a research department, a Cancer Genetics Clinic, a pharmacy, lab and X-ray services and a café for patients. Approximately 10,000 square feet of the facility houses the OSF Saint Francis Radiation Oncology Group and the Cancer Center for Healthy Living.
Approach
In 2004, DesignBuild hired STS to provide civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and landscape design for the new clinic. In the early phases of the project, STS assisted the client by identifying and selecting a building site and participating in the project planning. By being involved at every phase of the project, STS provided technical oversight and innovative solutions to move the project forward smoothly.
Client benefits
The project delivery method was a hybrid design-build approach, tailored to the client’s wishes to have a contractual single point of contact throughout design and construction. This resulted in maximum cost control and competitive bidding of sub-contracts to save the client money.
