Water quality management

Our water quality management (WQM) practice consists of four separate yet related service areas:

  • Surface water quality management
  • Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) and water quality resources
  • Water and wastewater treatment and conveyance
  • Waste-to-energy (WTE)

Water and wastewater treatment and conveyance services are also known as "traditional" water quality services, consisting of wastewater treatment, collection systems, pump stations and storage facilities. We perform all phases of service in this area, from evaluating the challenge and identifying a client's options to designing and constructing a solution, including contracting methods like design/build.

With WTE, we work with clients to take waste products and convert them into usable energy. As an example, we have worked with clients to develop a digestion system that converts animal manure to electricity. This process can significantly reduce operating costs by increasing gas production and reusing stabilized waste materials and water recycling. In addition, odors are reduced and pathogens destroyed. This process is one of the first in the country to successfully manage waste materials in this way. We will continue to lead the industry in refining this technology for a variety of waste streams.

TMDL refers to the amount of a particular pollutant a body of water can receive and still meet water quality standards. States must establish a TMDL for each pollutant that exceeds these water quality standards. Through our diverse expertise and experience in water quantity/quality modeling, data collection and analysis, GIS, Best Management Practices (BMP), design and construction, wetland surveys, program management and infrastructure-related engineering, we can address the competing elements within a watershed to facilitate an optimum solution to WQM.

The WQM practice is just one of the many tools that help us provide customized, cost-effective solutions to our clients. We also offer complementary services, such as storm water control, permitting and other compliance services, air quality and environmental management and construction services that provide clients with comprehensive environmental and engineering solutions. This suite of services, along with the proven expertise of our staff, makes us a leader in WQM.
